Christmas 2007, first real haircut, signing, need advice...

Christmas was a blast. Grandma and Grandpa scored a Wii for the kids. That is all they have been doing since Christmas. We do make them take breaks, play board games and read in between playing-tomorrow Wii play will be more limited...I have to admit it is fun !

Mia-Faith got her first real hair cut today. She lost 2 inches and it really looks cute. My plan is to continue to grow her hair out-I have this thing with letting her have long hair-it's a far cry from being shaved bald... she was beautiful bald too.....

We are still dealing with speech issues. Santa brought a Baby Einstein Signing DVD. Tonight Mia-Faith watched it and loved it. She is so smart and very quickly learned the signs for :
cup, milk, please, bath, more, friend, blanket, ball, stop, go, story, play...
I think I am heading off to the library soon to see if I can find more signing tapes. Mia-Faith has really become frustrated lately and I know it is because of her delay in communication.

What is very interesting is we pulled out and watched the tape of our time in China. On the tape there is a section of her singing in her crib. I taped it in the dark because it was priceless...well when that part of the tape came on Mia-Faith started singing the exact same song. Now I am starting to wonder if I should enroll her in a preschool Chinese class that starts January 3rd. The class is 2 days a week. Will this confuse her? Add to her delay? Help her?
Any thoughts ??

I think anyway she can express herself verbally, even if it is through Chinese language, will decrease her frustration level. I would go for it. You may be pleasantly surprised. I would also encourage mom, dad and the kids to learn as well. See if the instructor can download a CD of words for you to practice with her at home. That way everyone will get into it and probably help her come out of her shell more and eventually she can start expressing herself in English. I will say a special prayer for you all tonight!

Mia looks beautiful in her new doo! Again, she is always smiling in every picture I've seen:)

A child is never too young to learn to sign. I wish I would've learned it when I was a toddler instead of 22.

I don't know if it's on in your area or not, but there is a sign language program on our PBS station on Sunday mornings around 630 to 7. I am not exactly sure of the time. It would be perfect for Mia. If I can help you out with any sign language info please let me know.

Yes, do have her continue with Chinese as a second language. It will only help in the long run. I have many friends who speak two or more languages in their family and they are truly blessed with a talent most of us wish for.
Sign language is excellent too. My SIL is a professional ASL, and taught all her kids, does help with communications. Just my opinion.

Maddy LOVED the baby einstein Sign DVDs. She picked up very easily as well and communicated with us the first 2 months mostly with signing. Now she is using her words more but occasionally still signs. I would encourage signing!

How awesome that she is catching on so quickly. Kai signed a lot in the beginning and as her learn to properly pronounce words, the sign for that word was dropped.

We also speak Spanish at home, but his speech therapist warned us not to speak Spanish to him because of his language delay....he should first completely dominate the English language (according to her and his cleft doctor) before learning a new language.

As for the signing, it is a huge help in communication and very much encouraged.

Hugs!

I'd say go with the signing. I think the Chinese could be confusing.
She looks darling in her purple top! ;)
